Study Shows Significant Home Value Increases from Solar PV

As solar energy gains momentum and people become more aware of its benefits an interesting real estate trend has emerged; purchasing solar PV increases your homes value.  Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and the Department of Energy have found homes with solar PV in California, Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, New York, and Pennsylvania are all selling with more value than homes with out solar PV.  The Study analyzed a data set of nearly 23,000 homes sold between 2002 and 2013.

Here are some of the study’s conclusions:

  • Solar PV consistently adds value at about $4.00 per watt in the sample data set from 8 States.
  • New and existing homes both had similar value increases from solar PV.
  • Clear premiums from adding solar PV were seen through out 2013 in and outside of California.
